We are seeking a session-only legislative assistant to join our dedicated team at Poul Haas. In this role, you will be a key player in our legislative efforts, working collaboratively with our lobbyists and staff to deliver successful outcomes for our clients.

Position Overview and Expectations: As the Legislative Assistant, you will play a key role in our legislative efforts, working closely with our lobbyists and staff to keep our team informed of developments within the Minnesota Legislature and state agencies. Your responsibilities will include monitoring committee hearings and floor sessions, tracking legislation, and drafting hearing and bill summaries. You will be actively engaged in the legislative process and serve as an important link between our team’s work and real-time activity at the Capitol.

A core expectation of this role is the ability to take fast, accurate notes during committee hearings and floor sessions, and quickly translate notes into clear written summaries. Strong writing skills, sharp listening, and the ability to follow complex policy discussions in real time are essential.

The ideal candidate can take direction from multiple lobbyists, stay organized across shifting legislative schedules, and work independently when needed. Precision, good judgment, and reliability are crucial in a fast-paced environment where committee agendas change frequently. Professionalism and strong interpersonal skills are also important, as this role interacts regularly with legislators, staff, and other partners.

This is an entry-level position that offers an exceptional opportunity to learn from and support one of the most experienced, bipartisan government relations teams at the Minnesota Capitol while developing hands-on skills in client service and the legislative process.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Committee Engagement: Attend committee hearings, take detailed notes, and ensure our team is timely updated of committee actions.
  • Session Monitoring: Monitor legislative sessions to deliver detailed and timely updates on floor debate to our team.
  • Tracking: Track bill introductions and legislative actions.
  • Team Collaboration: Work closely with attorneys, lobbyists, and legislative coordinators.
  • Communication: Draft communications and detailed reports of legislative activities.
  • Media Monitoring: Monitor local and national news outlets daily to stay informed on relevant issues, and distribute articles of interest to lobbyists.
  • Team Support:
    • Take comprehensive notes during meetings and hearings.
    • Provide administrative support to attorneys and lobbyists.
    • Efficiently schedule appointments with legislators and clients.
    • Maintain organized and accessible files and records.
  • Office Program Proficiency: Experience in Microsoft 365 Suite, Google Suite, Adobe, Canva, and other related technologies.

Position Requirements:

  • College degree or degree in progress.
  • One to two years of work experience.
  • Knowledge of, or ability to quickly learn, the legislative process and bill tracking.
  • Exceptional note taking abilities and fast, accurate keyboarding skills.
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy in all written work.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects, deadlines, and shifting priorities.
  • Highly organized with strong multitasking and time management skills.
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to write clearly and informatively.
  • Capable of working under strict deadlines to deliver high quality documents.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, including professional interactions with elected officials and legislative staff.
  • Reliable and dependable team player who contributes to a positive, collaborative work environment.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft 365 Suite, Google Suite, Adobe, Canva, and social media tools.
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule based on Capitol activity and client needs.
  • Ability to work remotely from the Capitol, home, or the office as needed.
  • Access to a personal computer suitable for remote work.

Salary and Benefits:
