Job Summary

The Policy and Advocacy Coordinator is responsible for executing efforts to advance the policy agenda and advocacy strategy of Twin Cities Habitat for Humanity (TCHFH), upholding the mission to bring people together to create, preserve, and promote affordable homeownership and advance racial equity in housing. The Policy and Advocacy Coordinator activates grassroots supporters, including internal and external stakeholders, to take advocacy actions, and works across departments to engage communities in advance of where TCHFH plans to bring affordable homeownership. The Policy and Advocacy Coordinator raises awareness around housing policy and increasing financial resources for affordable homeownership at the federal, state, regional, and local levels, on behalf of TCHFH and through participation in various coalitions.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • In coordination with the Government Affairs team, activate grassroots supporters and equip them to advance the policy agenda of TCHFH and various coalitions.
    • Create and disseminate advocacy communications including action alerts, blogs, legislative updates, online resources, social media content, and talking points to organize, recruit, and mobilize support at the federal, state, regional, and local levels.
    • Utilize appropriate software programs to effectively engage advocates including clients, donors, and volunteers, connect them with elected officials, and enable them to take relevant and meaningful advocacy actions.
    • Oversee application of advocate database tools.
  • Plan, organize, and execute logistics for TCHFH grassroots advocacy events, including but not limited to annual Habitat on the Hill days in Minnesota and Washington DC, elections efforts, elected official builds, and site visits.
  • Coordinate TCHFH efforts to elevate affordable homeownership policy and funding.
    • Manage a portfolio of rotating regional and local community development projects and monitor for engagement opportunities.
    • Build and maintain relationships with elected officials and policymakers.
    • Represent TCHFH at events and coalitions.
  • Work with Homebuilding, Lending, and Programs & Services staff to understand project funding, policy, and regulatory needs of the organization, identify opportunities to maximize public funding sources, and integrate organizational priorities into advocacy.
  • Research and provide policy analysis as needed.
  • Track and summarize work for external reporting and internal performance goals.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education

  • BA/BS degree preferred in Community Development, Housing, Public Affairs, Policy, Urban Planning, or similar field
  • High school diploma or equivalent required

Experience

  • At least one-year experience with policy work at the federal, state, regional, or local level

Technical Skills

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, Salsa, or similar platforms

Competencies

  • Strong analysis, writing, and reporting skills
  • Ability to organize multi-faceted and diverse assignments and manage multiple priorities and projects simultaneously without much guidance
  • Ability to creatively problem solve and make decisions independently
  • Comfortable with teamwork and collaborative work projects
  • Personal maturity, emotional intelligence, and ability to work effectively with a variety of people and handle difficult situations with finesse
  • Passion for affordable housing, thriving communities, and systems change
  • Knowledge of government structure and policy making processes at the federal, state, regional, and local levels

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Speak and hear to communicate with others
  • Work at a desk or computer for extended periods of time
  • Move around the office or event

WORK ENVIRONMENT

Most of the work is performed in an office environment with some off-site meeting and event attendance required. Occasional travel for meetings, events, and projects including but not limited to visiting retail, warehouse, and residential construction sites with possible exposure to noise, smells, and debris.

COMPENSATION   

$52,700 to $54,000 annually dependent on qualifications and experience. Exempt, salaried position with excellent benefit package.
