General Description:

The Executive Director is responsible for leading and implementing programs and directing activities of the public affairs consultants, lobbyists, attorneys, and others engaged by Mining Minnesota. These duties include, but are not limited to:

 

  • Serve as the principal public representative of the association
  • Policy development and documentation
  • Participate in public, regulatory, legislative, and other relevant meetings
  • Recommend and implement approved strategic plan, initiatives, and tactics
  • Direct other engaged consultants
  • Administer professional services contracts with agencies, lobbyists, lawyers and consultants
  • Initiate, direct, and participate in association membership and fundraising activities
  • Responsible for administering budget and providing regular reports to the Board
  • The ED shall not be directly responsible for the overall association financial accounting activities, or for the administration of bank accounts, which responsibility will remain with the Secretary-Treasurer
  • Provide regular performance and activity reports to the Board and to the membership
  • Organization development including potential for expansion to regional association
  • Member and stakeholder communications
  • Perform such other functions as the President and Board direct

The successful candidate will play an integral role in the development and startup of non-ferrous mining in one of the world’s largest deposits of copper, nickel and precious metals right here in Minnesota.

 

The position requires a candidate with the abilities necessary to lead, organize, develop, and implement association activities and functions as well as communicate and educate a variety of stakeholders, including Board, members, media, legislators, agencies, and the general public.

 

Minimum Qualifications:

Education and Experience

  • A Bachelor's degree in public affairs, business administration or related concentration
  • A minimum of ten (10) years of progressive leadership experience in lobbying, public affairs, or association work

 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Effective communication skills, written and verbal including being comfortable speaking publicly and with the media
  • Effective negotiation skills
  • Experience in management and contractor supervision
  • Computer skills, including MS Excel, Word, PowerPoint and Outlook
  • Effectiveness in building working relationships, forming partnerships, and working in multi-disciplined teams, including the ability to influence outcomes
  • Integrity and ability to lead by example
  • Self-initiative, ability to work independently and productively in a fast-paced environment
  • Legal authorization to work in the United States without the need for sponsorship
  • Acceptable driving record with a valid driver’s license

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Graduate degree in public affairs, business administration or related concentration
  • Fifteen (15) + years of progressive leadership experience in lobbying, public affairs, or association work
  • Outstanding leadership skills
  • Experience in a manufacturing or mining environment
  • Association and or public/governmental relations experience in multiple states
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to present technical topics to a non-technical audience and stakeholders
  • High level of proficiency working with the state and federal government and agencies
