DIRECTOR OF PUBLIC POLICY

 

Summary

The Minnesota Multi Housing Association (MHA) seeks an experienced Director of Public Policy to advance and support our legislative, municipal, and regulatory activities aligned with MHA’s policies. This role is pivotal in promoting MHA’s government relations program and advocating our mission to both members and policymakers.

 

Responsibilities

  • Cultivate and maintain strategic relationships with elected officials, staff, and other government officials.
  • Provide counsel to association committees, officers, and President on legislative, regulatory, and municipal matters.
  • Monitor and review proposed regulations impacting the multifamily housing industry.
  • Communicate MHA’s position to lawmakers and other public officials.
  • Participate in committee hearings by testifying on behalf of the association, drafting and editing position papers, and coordinating member participation.
  • Prepare, maintain, and communicate MHA’s legislative agenda.
  • Facilitate cooperative government relations and public affairs efforts with non-profit organizations and other associations.
  • Conduct and synthesize research on policy trends affecting the multifamily housing sector to support strategic recommendations.
  • Engage regularly with association members, providing briefings and updates on policy impacts and seeking input to align MHA’s advocacy with member interests.
  • Proactively seek member involvement in MHA’s government relations program.
  • Regularly communicate status updates to MHA members on legislative, municipal, and regulatory activities.
  • Serve as public spokesperson for MHA when requested by association leadership.
  • Coordinate Multi Housing PAC fundraising and reporting to members.
  • File lobbying and PAC reports as required.
  • Advise and assist members as necessary.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

 

Qualifications

  • Previous government relations experience, legislative or municipal experience, or a demonstrated knowledge of the legislative process. Experience in housing policy or advocacy for trade associations is a plus.
  • Ability to establish and maintain strong working relationships with legislators and staff, and MHA leadership and members.
  • Interest in representing owners, managers, and developers of multifamily housing.
  • Ability to evaluate complex issues and recommend appropriate action to further the objectives of MHA and take action as directed.
  • Proven track record of developing communication strategies for influencing policy and representing industry positions effectively.
  • Experience using digital tools and platforms to engage stakeholders and amplify policy messages.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Ability to use information and discussion to cooperate with and influence elected officials.
  • Familiarity with social media platforms.
  • Ability to manage detail-oriented, time-sensitive tasks under pressure.
  • Ability to work independently and in a strong team environment.
