Position: Public Policy Communications Specialist 

About the Job

Through engagement and collaboration with our members, Medical Alley Association (MAA) develops strategies and collects data to support successful legislative agendas in Minnesota and Washington, DC. MAA influences the shaping of public policy through our strong relationships with State and Federal officials and their staffs. MAA also plays a significant partnership role with other national and regional organizations. 

MAA is seeking a Public Policy Communications Specialist. The successful candidate will have demonstrated exceptional written communications skills.  A background working in state or federal policy and communications would be preferred.  and the candidate should be able to execute at a tactical level and drive progress in a collaborative, fast-paced environment. They must have a strong understanding of brand positioning and marketing communications in this evolving world, with a focus on how audiences think, behave, build perceptions, and consume information. 

The successful candidate will play a key role in ensuring robust communication of our vision, mission, and policy positions. As such, we're looking for an excellent writer with a proven ability to turn complex information, data, and arguments, into clear and concise messaging. This person will work across policy and advocacy, communications, marketing, and MAA’s membership teams to help develop and support policy messaging, research, and strategy.

Responsibilities Will Include: 

  • Provide expertise in translating policy issues and challenges to lawmaker, regulators, the MAA membership, and other stakeholders.
  • Research and analyze policies, positions, and data and distill into messaging and communications that advance MAA’s policy agenda and communications plan
  • Develop policy content for a broad range of content channels. This could include policy briefs, blog posts, tweets, policymaker briefings, presentations, digital media materials, talking points, and more
  • Have a deep understanding of the media landscape (both local and national), be hands-on and capable of managing proactive and reactive communications from strategy to execution
  • Help lead cross functional work on key policy areas
  • Work with external stakeholders on policy positioning messaging 
  • Work closely with MAA Director of Marketing and Communications to ensure consistent and strategic messaging across the organization 
  • Maintain and grow MAA’s government relations contact list and outreach efforts 
  • Manage project-related logistics according to timelines

Required Skills and Qualifications: 

  • Bachelor’s Degree required with at least five years of experience working in policy communications, policy relations, health policy, and/or content creation roles
  • Experience working for or with governments, in politics, nonprofits or other public policy entities, preferred
  • Excellent writing, editing, and messaging skills
  • Proven skill and passion in analysis, critical thinking, and policy messaging
  • You value outcomes over outputs and have enthusiasm for delivering high-quality communications
  • Exceptional, compelling writing and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to quickly develop trusting relationships internally and externally, and influence across all levels
  • Sound project management skills (timelines, budgets, and resources)
