Job Description for Government Relations Professional

Job Summary

Advise and represent clients at the Minnesota State Legislature and with State Agencies.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Advocate for clients and represent clients’ interests at the state legislature and with state agencies through all phases of the legislative process
  • Research and understand policy issues and the impact legislative actions have on Flaherty & Hood clients
  • Conduct meetings with lawmakers, partisan and non-partisan legislative staff, state agency personnel, and representatives from the Governor’s office
  • Testify at legislative committee hearings and in front of other state agency bodies
  • Draft handouts, talking points, and other advocacy materials
  • Maintain communications with clients during all phases of representation
  • Assist with planning, preparation, and execution of client events such as board meetings, conferences, client site visits, webinars, etc.
  • Client retention and acquisition

Qualifications

  • Undergraduate degree in political science, communications, economics, or some like field
  • At least two years of experience working in a public policy setting such as the state legislature, state agency, local government, non-profit, or other firm doing government relations work
  • Basic understanding of the workings of the Minnesota State Legislature and state government
  • Strong communication skills including the ability to synthesize complex issues into easily understood written and verbal communications; public speaking in a variety of situations including in front of large groups, public bodies, and testimony at the legislature
  • Strong interpersonal skills
  • Attention to detail
  • Availability to work unusual hours and occasional weekends and be available for periodic in-state travel, some of which is overnight
  • Entrepreneurial mindset
  • Ability to manage time and get work accomplished with varied volume, extent, and deadlines
