DEPARTMENT: External Relations – Public Affairs

LED BY: Grassroots Advocacy Manager

HOURS: Full-Time; Temporary; 40 hours/week (June 3 to November 15)

SALARY: $52,000.00 To 55,000.00 Annually
 

 

POSITION SUMMARY: Second Harvest Heartland’s Voter Engagement Coordinators will help develop and execute an engagement strategy to reach a broad base of potential voters using non-partisan outreach and education tactics and language. Voter Engagement Coordinators will report to and work closely with the Grassroots Advocacy Manager to recruit volunteers, organize voter engagement and outreach efforts, and lead voter education activities in defined geographic areas of responsibility. This may include informational tabling at community events, organizing informational town hall meetings and other events, voter registration and turnout activities, and other efforts to increase awareness of hunger and related issues leading up to the November 2024 general election. As a 501(c)3 organization, none of these activities will be done in coordination with or on behalf of any candidate for public office or any political party.
 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Serve as a model in the organization for fostering and exemplifying Second Harvest Heartland’s values: we deliver, we innovate, we lead with our hearts, and we believe differences make us stronger.
  • Design and implement a nonpartisan voter engagement plan within a defined geographic area.
  • Organize and coordinate election education activities adhering to nonpartisan 501(c)3 nonprofit guidelines, including but not limited to:
  • Plan nonpartisan candidate forums
  • Coordinate voter registration and turnout drives
  • Prepare candidate and voter education materials
  • Build relationships and partner with food shelves and other 501(c)3 nonpartisan organizations with similar interests
  • Recruit, train, and manage volunteers to table, canvass, phone bank, text bank, door-to-door canvass, and/or conduct other voter engagement and education efforts.
  • Prepare and deliver educational presentations or remarks in nonpartisan venues about the election and the importance of being a voter.
  • Prepare informational resources and content, including guidelines, best practices, and toolkits to share with agency partners.
  • Remain nonpartisan when interacting with potential voters and maintain a neutral stance on candidates for elected office.
  • Support other voter engagement programs and activities as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • A minimum of one to three years of professional experience in civic engagement, GOTV organizing, outreach, coalition building, or a relevant field.
  • Experience planning events and public speaking, including delivering presentations.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Willingness to work a flexible schedule, including evening and weekend hours.
  • Ability to work with flexibility, efficiency, and enthusiasm, both individually and as part of a team in a fast-paced, high-demand environment.
  • A bachelor’s degree is preferred but not required. Any combination of experience, education, and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying.
  • Demonstrated familiarity with Microsoft Office, Office 365, and the ability to learn other computer software programs.
  • Familiarity or experience with advocacy software like EveryAction, Voter Action Network (VAN), and/or Quorum a plus.
  • Conversational proficiency in Spanish, Hmong, and/or Somali a plus.
